Macau reports declines in per-person gaming spendings
Macau, an autonomous region on the south coast of China where casino gaming is lawful, saw declines in visitors’s gaming spending per person.
Total spending by tourists rose by 8% year-on-year, reaching MOP 56.21 billion, which equals $7.04 billion from January to September. However, per-person spending declined by 17% to MOP 2,168, which equals $272.
These numbers could be influenced by China’s slowing economy, as Chinese tourists make up a significant portion of Macau’s visitors. Main spending areas included shopping (45.6%), accommodations (25.5%), and food and beverage (20.8%).
While individual spending declined, visitor arrivals rose, totalling nearly 26 million, which is more than 30.1% when compared to 2023. Package tourism also saw a remarkable 101.2$ rise, pointing to Macau’s appeal despite tighter budgets. The average length of stay, however, decreased slightly to 1.2 days, indicating a preference for shorter trips.
Macau’s gaming sector
Declines in per-person spending highlight Macau’s continued appeal but suggest that both gaming and non-gaming sectors must adapt to a shift in spending habits. As economic factors influence tourism visits, Macau may need to monitor its offerings to encourage higher spending and longer stays among visitors.
