Macau to report the highest gambling disorder number
Being across the Pearl River Delta from Hong Kong, Macau, an autonomous region on the south coast of China where casino gaming is lawful, may hit a record with its numbers of individuals suffering from problem gambling.
According to the Central Registry System for Individuals with Gambling Disorders, in the first half of 2024, Macau has already seen a significant rise in those numbers.
The Macau Social Welfare Bureau (SWB) reported 108 cases from January to June, an increase of 39 compared to the same period in 2023. This is almost 63% of last year’s total, showing that 2024 could potentially see the highest number of cases in over a decade.
The trend has shown steady growth over the past five years, particularly since the COVID-19 pandemic. Last year, 169 people asked for help. That number was the highest one since 2017.
Reports on people suffering from gambling disorders show the following results:
Employed people – 69%
Married people – 35%
Single people – 44%
Financial challenges are a key driver, with 24% citing financial difficulties as their reason for gambling. Almost 71% of the individuals identified by the SWB have debts, with many owing substantial amounts. Baccarat remains the most popular game among gamblers, indicating ongoing concerns regarding gambling behavior and public health in Macau.
