Macau’s revenue is improved despite the month’s weak start

This month, Macau is expected to bring in MOP 18.5 billion (US$2.3 billion) in gross gaming revenue

DS Kim, Mufan Shi, and Selina Li from JP Morgan believe that the gaming sector made approximately MOP8.3 billion ($1 billion) over the first two weeks, translating to about MOP593 million ($74 million) per day. The three anticipate a gradual increase in the casino revenues after the completion of the UEFA European Championship, recently.

The report stated:

“This implies that last week’s run rate improved by 15% y/y to MOP635 million or $79 million per day (from only MOP550 million/day ($68.4 million) in week 1) as summer holiday demand gradually kicked in.”

Since Covid began, the general public has experienced a growth of five to ten percent, even as VIP earnings level out at twenty to twenty-five percent. Over the past week, the Macao Government Tourism Office recorded a mean of eighty-seven thousand daily tourists and projected a 90% occupancy rate for hotels up from 88% till June.

The analysts stated that based on their projections, revenue of Macau’s gaming sector would have a lower change in EBITDA during June and July because the Chinese government has tightened its grip over money exchanging activities taking place within the country, which in turn affects it.

Capacity utilization is projected to have been lower than 20% since lockdowns were eased in February; it is estimated that operators have been unable to break even during the period under review without any further assistance in terms of liquidity.
