Maine DFS operators exit market, Underdog faces fine

In Maine, five daily fantasy sports businesses will no longer be in operation.

Boom Shakalaka, Sportshub, Underdog, Data Force, and Bidventures are discontinuing their operations in Maine as a result of not renewing their licenses, according to a statement from the state’s gambling control unit. DraftKings, FanDuel, Yahoo, and RealTime Fantasy are the six DFS firms that are still operating in Maine.

After being fined $391,850 in October 2023 for violating regulations pertaining to its pick’em-style DFS tournaments, Underdog, one of the operators, is departing Maine. The Maine Gambling Control Unit assessed the fine, and Underdog was given the opportunity to oppose it in court.

The scenario in Maine is a part of a broader national trend in which DFS operators are leaving marketplaces in multiple states. Due to concerns that their contests resembled sports betting, operators such as Underdog and PrizePicks were ordered to cease their services in Arkansas and Florida. After beginning operations in North Carolina, Underdog also made the decision to discontinue its paid contests there.
