The champions face a tough test
PSG arrive in Manchester as back-to-back UCL winners, having beaten Arsenal in May’s final, and are now chasing a third consecutive title. Their campaign got underway with a 6-1 win over Slovan Bratislava, powered by a brace from Dembélé, a hat-trick from Ferran Torres, and a goal from Fabián Ruiz, a result that extended the club’s unbeaten run in the competition to 11 matches.
Torres, who joined the club over the summer, has quickly become an important attacking weapon. The World Cup winner currently tops the scoring charts in both competitions he’s featured in, with four goals in five Ligue 1 appearances and a hat-trick already in the Champions League.
Facing Manchester City will put Luis Enrique’s side to a real test. City have been consistent trophy contenders in recent years and opened their own UCL campaign with a 2-0 win away at Porto. The Norwegian striker, who leads the Premier League scoring charts with five goals, has helped Maresca’s side win all five of their league matches so far, putting them top of the table.
History between the two sides
The two clubs’ last UCL meeting, back on January 22, 2025, saw PSG come from 2-0 down in Paris to win 4-2, a result the Parisians will hope to build momentum from as they head to the Etihad. Before that, the sides met twice during the 2021-22 group stage, splitting the two legs. Across eight total meetings, Manchester City currently lead the head-to-head record 4-2, and this latest match adds another chapter to that rivalry, with PSG arriving as serious contenders to add another win.
Tactical battlegrounds
The two managers bring contrasting styles, as Maresca’s City typically build attacks from deep, involving the goalkeeper in possession while applying aggressive pressing higher up. Luis Enrique leans on wing-back width and a front three that regularly interchanges positions. Aside from the headline matchup between Torres and Haaland, there’s also a battle of French talent to watch, with Doué, who assisted against Marseille, going up against Cherki, who has three goals and two assists in the Premier League so far this season.
Midfield could prove decisive, with City typically setting up in a 4-2-3-1, with new arrivals Fernández and Anderson handling central duties, the Argentine already contributing an assist against Porto and his first City goal against Sunderland. PSG, meanwhile, generally favor a 4-3-3, as seen against Slovan and in most of their domestic fixtures. Vitinha, who set a UCL record last season with more than 1,600 completed passes in a single campaign, will be supported by Fabián Ruiz, who has two Ligue 1 assists and a goal against Slovan to his name.
Adding an extra storyline, Donnarumma, who won the UCL with PSG in 2025, will face his former club for the first time since moving to Manchester City.
