Maryland reveals state’s legal vs. illegal iGaming platforms

Maryland Regulator, Maryland Lottery and Gaming has released a list to help residents distinguish between legal and illegal iGaming platforms in the state.

Currently, Maryland only permits two types of online gaming: sports betting and online fantasy competitions. These activities can only be offered by licensed operators. To distinguish licensed operators from illegal ones is an ongoing issue worldwide so the state decided to make this process easier for its people.

The list categorizes platforms into three groups:

1. Licensed Online Sports Wagering Operators -These platforms are authorized to offer sports betting and include famous names like Bally Bet Sportsbook, DraftKings, FanDuel, and Caesars Sportsbook.

2. Registered Fantasy Competition Operators – These companies, including DraftKings, FanDuel, and Yahoo Fantasy Sports are approved to run fantasy sports competitions.

3. Illegal Operators – Platforms operating without proper licenses and ordered to cease their activities by the state. Some of these include BetUS, Stake.us, and Golden Hearts.

Maryland is also considering new legislation (Senate Bill 860 and House Bill 1140) aimed at tightening online gaming laws, targeting sweepstakes casinos. These games, which use in-game currency that can be exchanged for prizes or cash, would be banned if the bill is passed.

The legislation also seeks to hold game software developers accountable for providing services to illegal operators, aiming to further restrict unlicensed gaming in Maryland.
