Massachusetts lawmakers stand against iGaming expansion
Massachusetts Treasurer Deborah Goldberg and Governor Maura Healey have raised concerns about iGaming legislation, as a report on legalizing online casinos initially required by the end of December 2025 has been pushed back to March 16, 2026.
Legislators are looking to fill budget gaps in the coming 2026 year, and online casinos remain on the table. Representative David Muradian’s H4431 bill on legalizing online casinos is being considered as a solution to the budget issues.
Deborah Goldberg commented:
“We won’t be able to compete in terms of advertising. So, I, right now, am firmly against iGaming. They may not like me for that, but I have to think about the people of Massachusetts, and that’s my top priority.”
Maura Healey also shared that she has long been concerned about the gambling market and the impact it can have on problem gambling.
Healey stressed:
“The data is concerning. There are probably ways to deal with that. I don’t know the answers, but I think it is something that policymakers across the country should be looking at in the wake of data that’s come out.”
If Muradian’s bill is passed, three casinos will be allowed to offer iGaming products, which will be taxed at 15%. Industry stakeholders have estimated that iGaming can bring in around $200 million in annual state revenue.
