According to the filings, FMF is asking the court for a temporary restraining order and preliminary and permanent injunctions to stop Kalshi from using its trademarks, plus damages covering any profits Kalshi made from the alleged infringement. The federation argues that using the Liga MX name could make customers think Kalshi has an official partnership with the league or its clubs, and also objects to Kalshi using FMF’s data to settle the outcome of its markets.
The FMF stated in the lawsuit:
“Kalshi’s market rules designate FMF’s data as the facts that determine whether a wager wins or loses.”
The dispute goes back to July 17, 2026, when FMF’s general counsel sent Kalshi a cease-and-desist letter over its use of Liga MX and club logos. Kalshi removed some logos and added disclaimers but kept using the names, arguing its approach counted as fair use for identifying its CFTC-regulated markets. After multiple exchanges between the two sides through August 2026, Kalshi rejected FMF’s position again on September 1, leading the federation to take the case to court. In its complaint, FMF notes that Kalshi already refers to other leagues using generic terms, calling the NBA Finals or MLB clubs by different names, and argues it could do the same for Liga MX.
