New class action lawsuits against Dutch operators

The European gambling industry is at the center of attention in the global gambling market.

Gamblers across Europe are taking online gambling companies to court, trying to get back the money they lost. The reason is that all these companies managed to earn money without being properly licensed.

In the Netherlands, this issue is more than actual. Two major companies are the target of the issue. This started after a Dutch court ruled in April that one company had to return €200,000 to a player as a reason for operating without a license at that time.

The player’s lawyer, Benzi Loonstein, called the decision “groundbreaking” as it can stop all future similar cases. The Supreme Court is expected to make a final decision by early 2025.

Regulating the gambling industry

With more focus on regulating the gambling industry, many players argue that the companies shouldn’t have accepted their money in the first place without the right approvals.

Legal procedures are also being taken in Austria. Players are suing here as well, however, with an interesting twist. The courts here have ruled that gambling companies can also try to recover money from winners who played when they weren’t licensed. This growing wave of lawsuits is prompting discussions on the need for better regulation across Europe.
