New Jersey targets college sports bets with new bill

Introduced by Senator Kristin Corrado, a new bill, S-3080, has passed New Jersey’s key Senate committee and aims to stop sportsbooks from allowing bets on individual college players’ performances to protect student-athletes from harassment.

Prop bets have become a popular part of sports gambling, especially online. But according to Senator Corrado, they’re also leading to harmful consequences. When bets don’t pan out, frustrated gamblers often get upset and send threats and abusive messages directly to the athletes, many of whom are young students.

Unlike professionals, student-athletes don’t get any payment or insurance that will protect them in the same way, making them more vulnerable to harassment. The NCAA agrees and has pushed for similar bans in other states.

Being one of the pioneers in the legalized sports betting market, New Jersey will join Ohio, Maryland, Louisiana, and Vermont, which have already banned player-specific bets on college games.

On July 8th, the ban was officially approved.
