New Kentucky bill to raise minimum age for sports betting
The Kentucky House has passed House Bill 904, which aims to change the state’s gambling framework by raising the minimum age for sports betting and banning prop bets connected to college athletes.
The proposal was approved with a 79-15 vote and was sponsored by Republican Representatives Michael Meredith and Matthew Koch, seeking to increase the minimum sports betting age from 18 to 21. The goal of the bill is to generally improve consumer protections and keep the integrity of sports betting in Kentucky.
Michael Meredith stated:
“One of the big changes is that we would move the age of sports wagering from 18 to 21. It would also ban prop betting on in-state collegiate athletes, those who play for Kentucky teams. This would take away any incentive for bribery or harassing a player for not meeting a goal.”
Additionally, the bill would regulate fantasy sports contests and bring them under the licensing and taxation of the Kentucky Horse Racing and Gaming Corporation. A section to ban individuals owing more than $1,000 in child support from placing sports bets before the debt is cleared will also be introduced.
There is also a suggestion to legalize fixed-odds betting on horse racing, which is currently banned in Kentucky.
