New York restricts loot boxes on Roblox and other platforms
New York is introducing new laws to regulate digital platforms like Roblox, where children are allowed to spend real money without adult oversight, and protect minors from scams, predators, and dangerous chatbots.
The state is moving to ban loot boxes, which are packages that give random rewards and are bought with real money. It’s argued that they resemble gambling and are problematic because of their chance-based nature.
Roblox also uses Robux, a virtual currency bought with real money, which leads to children spending without understanding limits.
For this purpose, New York Governor Kathy Hochul has proposed new legislation to protect minors from online financial risks.
Hochul stated:
“These proposals will create a nation-leading standard that will ensure our children’s safety in online and real-world environments where they spend time.”
Platforms will be required to give parental controls for setting spending limits and approving purchases, and age verification systems will also be implemented.
The governor warned that these games encourage children to spend money, and parents aren’t notified until charges appear.
Additionally, stricter communication laws will be applied; strangers will be blocked from sending messages, and location sharing will be disabled for users under 18.
