New York to require warnings on betting advertisements

Kathy Hochul, a New York Governor, signed a new bill requiring betting operators in New York to include mandatory warnings on their ads.

Previously, in New York, all gambling and sports betting advertisements had to include warnings on problem gambling together with a number of people suffering from addiction.

Now, with new legislation signed on October 1 by New York’s governor, Kathy Hochul, this rule will be expanded to mobile sports betting as well.

Kathy Hochul said:

“I want New Yorkers to be able to safely enjoy the activities they love while proceeding with caution when necessary. I’m confident that with the signing of this new bill, New Yorkers will have easier access to the safety resources they need to better protect themselves from the grips of addiction.”

In 2022, sports wagering became legal, and starting at that time, the state saw a rise in problem gambling numbers, especially among the group aged younger than 25.

Chinazo Cunningham, Commissioner of the State Office of Addiction Services and Supports, commented:

“More people than ever can access gambling, so as these opportunities increase, it is important that we continue our efforts to educate New Yorkers about the risks associated with problem gambling and where they can find help and support.”

The new legislation aims to protect New Yorkers from the harmful effects of gambling.

Assemblyman Clyde Vanel, D-Queens, said:

“We are excited that the governor recognizes this bill as an important step forward in protecting New Yorkers that may be vulnerable to a gambling addiction. With this new law, we are strengthening the protection of New Yorkers across our state. These new changes to the gambling advertisements law will help to promote responsible gaming practices and provide support for those who need it.”

The initiative to provide additional support to those struggling with gambling issues is a result of actions from many fantasy apps that introduce parlay wagering, allowing users to combine their bets on player statistics into one single wager.

Moreover, young players get more excited as they have a chance to have quick wins through separate bets. They can still develop an addiction to fantasy sports, even if these activities don’t technically qualify as gambling.

Problem gambling is often described as a ‘hidden addiction’ that doesn’t show any physical signs but can lead to serious financial, emotional, and physical consequences.
