UKGC expands its advisory board to promote safer gambling

Two new members have joined the UK Gambling Commission‘s Advisory Board for Safer Gambling (ABSG).

The UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) is an executive, non-departmental public body of the Government of the United Kingdom responsible for regulating gambling and supervising gaming law in Great Britain.

The UK Gambling Commission is expanding its team and has new members, who are Dr. Virve Marionneau and Dr. Spencer Murch.

Dr. Virve Marionneau is a sociologist and the director of the Centre for Research on Addiction, Control, and Governance at the University of Helsinki in Finland. She dives deep into various gambling-related issues, exploring everything from regulations and policy evaluations to the personal experiences and harms associated with gambling. Her work sheds light on the complexities of gambling in society.

Dr. Spencer Murch, on the other hand, is a cognitive psychologist and currently serves as an AGRI Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Calgary in Canada. His research focusses on understanding the mental processes behind gambling behavior, contributing valuable insights to the field.

Anna van der Gaag, chair of ABSG., said:

“We are very fortunate to have Virve and Spencer as our newest members. They are highly respected academics, both with a strong record of achievement in the field of gambling studies, and together they will expand the national and international research expertise we offer to the Commission. Gambling is a global business and the regulatory challenges faced in different jurisdictions have much in common. I am delighted to be welcoming them and have no doubt they will bring valuable new insights to an ever-expanding range of topics which inform policy and practice in gambling regulation.”

Both Dr. Virve Marionneau and Dr. Spencer Murch are dedicated to exploring the details of gambling and its impact on individuals and communities.
