New Zealand court targets bet365, Super Group, and SkyCity

The High Court of Auckland in New Zealand has filed a lawsuit against bet365, Super Group, and SkyCity Entertainment Group, accusing the operators of offering illegal online gambling to residents.

The cases have been brought to court separately, according to April 17 filings received by Justice Ian Gault; however, the court is yet to decide whether to create a joint case, as the proceedings involve at least one common plaintiff and are connected to the same legal problem. Additionally, the names of the plaintiffs have not been disclosed based on a name suppression order.

In the case of SkyCity, its Malta-based platform was targeted by the lawsuit, while the bet365 proceedings have named CEO Denise Coates, Hillside (Gaming) ENC, and Hillside (Sports) as defendants. For Super Group, CEO Neal Menashe, the Bayton, DigiMedia, Digamma, GM Gaming, and Baytree Alderney entities were accused in the filings.

The lawsuit is connected to the June 2025 amendments to the Racing Industry Act 2020, which made racing and sports bets illegal to accept for offshore operators, while a licensed framework for 15 operators is set to launch on December 1, 2026.

Despite the legal case, all three operators have publicly announced plans to apply for New Zealand licenses when the application process opens.
