New Zealand Invests $81 Million to Reduce Gambling Harm

Matt Doocey, New Zealand’s Minister for Mental Health, announced an investment of NZ$81 million (approximately US$49 million) to reduce the impact of gambling harm.

As per New Zealand’s 2003 Gambling Act, the gambling harm strategy should be updated every 3 years. Matt Doocey believes the investment will help players experiencing harm access support, strengthen early prevention, and lower the effects of harm in the market.

New Zealand is currently developing a regulatory framework for a legal iGaming market, set to launch in 2026. Several global brands, including 888, Betway, and Bet365, are interested in obtaining a local iGaming license.

The government’s latest strategy was built through a two-stage consultation process. The strategy will be funded through the new Problem Gambling Levy Regulations, paid for by non-casino gaming machine operators, casinos, TAB, and the lottery monopoly Lotto NZ.

Doocey mentioned that 18 new clinical internship positions would be established to improve players’ access to support.

He stated:

“It is expected these interns will be supported to develop gambling harm expertise by working closely with a supervisor in a clinical setting. This approach is necessary to bridge the gap between education and work. It will give interns the practical experience needed to help people affected by gambling harm.”

In conclusion, Doocey said that the strategy will focus on delivering timely, effective support for individuals, families, and communities affected by gambling harm. The key areas include increasing access to treatment and support, improving prevention and early intervention initiatives, and improving the effectiveness of support for those experiencing gambling harm.
