No new casinos in the southern provinces of Cambodia
Per the Prime Minister’s announcement, no new casinos shall be constructed in the southern Cambodian provinces of Kep and Kampot except for those integrated resorts and casinos currently existing at Bokor Mountain.
Century Entertainment Casino, owned by Dara Sakor is excluded from the ban.
As per a report from the Commercial Gambling Management Commission of Cambodia (CGMC), most of the casinos were located in coastal areas, while few were distributed among provinces neighboring them. Out of 48 casinos located close to Thailand, another 35 were positioned along the borders with Vietnam. But comparatively only one such facility existed in Phnom Penh, the country’s capital city.
According to Article 19 of the Management of Commercial Gaming Act 2020, gambling establishments will be prohibited in particular places that aim at conserving cultural and religious values or for any other vital reasons. There is, however, an exception to this rule for casinos that have been operational in such areas at any time before the enactment of the Act as pointed out in Article 20.
