North Carolina to introduce 23% tax on sports betting

On June 30, 2026, North Carolina shared its budget for 2027, which revealed that lawmakers are planning to increase the sports betting tax for operators to 23%, compared to the previous 18% rate.

Currently, the tax applies to licensed operators’ gross gambling revenue, which they have been paying since the launch of the state’s regulated market back in March 2024. Since then, operators have paid around $300 million in sports betting taxes.

According to the authorities, the taxes collected from sports betting were used for gambling addiction treatments, education programs, youth sports programs, and 13 university athletics departments. With the increased budget, $500,000 is set to be allocated for offsetting expenses, $1 million will go to youth sports programs, and up to $30 can potentially go towards funding the North Carolina Major Events, Games, and Attraction fund.

At the same time, it’s planned that the tax for prediction markets in the state will be set at 6%, while prediction platform operators will be permitted to offer their products without a specific license.

With the budget plan now finalized, it’s up to the legislature to decide whether to accept it or not, as the fiscal year will end on July 7, 2026.
