NSW keeps Star Entertainment’s Sydney license suspended

The Star Entertainment Group Limited is an Australian gambling and entertainment company, founded in 2011. The company has casinos in Sydney, Brisbane, and the Gold Coast.
The casino’s license in Sydney was suspended on October 21, 2022, after an investigation conducted by regulatory officials. The investigation found several serious issues with anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism failings. However, the casino was allowed to keep operating, but with a regulator-appointed manager.
The second investigation, conducted in August 2024, by NSW (regulatory bodies or agencies in New South Wales) found continued compliance failures, including a $3.2 million fraud case, where players claimed their won funds through a software glitch in “ticket in, cash out” machines for almost a month and a half.
There were also different gaming rule violations found in the investigation. The casino was supposed to follow the rule of “three-hour limits on gaming,” however, it did not do so and had its patrons gambling without taking breaks. This also shows that the casino valued its profit the most, thus it will not be taking back its license to operate in Sydney.
Talking about the casino’s current performance, the regulator’s chief commissioner, Philip Crawford, said:
“It has only very recently turned its attention to dealing with challenges that should have been prioritised earlier.”
The regulator keeps reviewing their findings to understand what will be the future of the company.
