The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) has imposed a $50,000 fine on Malta-based Booming Games, after finding breaches in the provider’s auto-play functions on multiple slots.
The commission has revealed that Booming Games didn’t configure, test, or monitor some of its games before offering them to players in the Canadian province, meaning that the slots were launched with the banned auto-play function and were live for months before being identified.
CEO and registrar at the AGCO, Dr. Karin Schnarr, stated:
“Ontario’s game design standards are fundamental player-protection measures built into the regulated igaming market – they are not optional technical requirements. Registered suppliers must have effective controls in place to prevent prohibited features from reaching Ontario players. When those safeguards are not respected, the AGCO will take regulatory action.”
For context, the auto-play feature lets slot reels spin non-stop without a player starting the round, which is banned because it removes the required natural pause between each bet. According to gambling regulators, the stop is necessary in helping players stay aware of their spending and activity during sessions. Additionally, the violation was found after the regulator’s compliance team conducted proactive checks.
After the commission’s action, the auto-play function was disabled, and Booming Games was notified of the breach. The provider has the right to appeal the decision within 15 days of receiving the notice.
