PENN’s ESPN Bet nears launch in New York
PENN Entertainment‘s latest addition, ESPN Bet, will be live in New York within a few weeks.
Penn Entertainment, Inc., formerly known as Penn National Gaming, is an American entertainment company and operator of integrated entertainment, sports content, and casino gambling.
Having the strongest footprint in the US with its 43 properties in 20 states, under brands including Hollywood Casino, Ameristar, and Boomtown, PENN Entertainment’s latest addition, ESPN Bet is still facing delays and remains not available for New York bettors. New York is considered a key market due to its size and influence, and PENN is optimistic about ESPN Bet’s potential to compete, especially among younger bettors.
Initially, it was expected to see the launch in August. According to the company’s Executive Vice President, Mark Walker, they were “ready to go” and were just waiting for the official approval from New York. But now, he expects to have ESPN Bet live within weeks, possibly later this month, without any red flags that will delay the debut.
ESPN Bet will replace WynnBet Sportsbook, which stopped its operations in July. WynnBet’s license was acquired by PENN for $25 million with the aim to change the game and take control of the industry from dominators by FanDuel and DraftKings, who have control of almost 80% of the revenue.
The delay comes as a disappointment, with the college football season already underway and the NFL season set to begin on September 5. Despite missing its original launch date, PENN remains confident in ESPN Bet’s future and is optimistic that it will soon be available to New Yorkers eager to wager on their favorite sports.
