On March 30, 2026, two gambling-connected organizations announced a sports team transaction, as Tilman Fertitta purchased the Connecticut Sun WNBA from the Mohegan Tribe for $300 million.

Both sides are quite involved in the casino sector, as Fertitta is the biggest individual shareholder in Wynn Resorts and the owner of the Golden Nugget casino chain. There are also potential talks of Tilman Fertitta buying Caesars Entertainment for $7 billion. On the other hand, the Mohegan Tribe operates Mohegan Sun, a renowned tribal property in the U.S.

Joe Soper, corresponding secretary for the Mohegan Tribe Council, stated:

“Mohegan owes an enormous amount of gratitude, first and foremost, to our extraordinary fans cheering on the team for 23 incredible seasons. This team and what the talented women who have worn this uniform over the years have meant to Mohegan Sun, our region, and the impact they’ve made both on and off the court has been nothing short of remarkable.”

Talking about the gaming sector, the Mohegan Tribe hasn’t had a lot of luck in expanding past Mohegan Sun, as an $11 billion Freedom Plaza project in downstate New York was rejected in 2025. The operator had also tried to expand into Korea with its $1.6 billion INSPIRE project, but the resort was seized in February 2025.

Regarding the WNBA Sun, the team will play the upcoming season in Connecticut before moving to Houston and becoming the Houston Comets in 2027.
