President Lula speaks against iGaming platforms in Brazil
On February 9, 2026, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva announced that his administration would begin a crackdown on online gambling platforms through tax compliance, corruption investigations, and child protection measures.
The President’s remarks come as the government is preparing to enforce restrictions that were approved in 2025, aimed at preventing minors from accessing certain online content and requiring apps and digital platforms to implement age-verification systems.
The President stated:
“We are going to take a very serious stance against gambling. They are taking money from the poor people of this country. I learned to be against gambling. I was against casinos and the illegal lottery because the church taught me that I had to be against gambling. What is happening today is that the casino has gone into homes. It’s in the living room, in the hands of your children.”
The new rules would prevent minors from accessing inappropriate content online, such as websites that show gambling ads, escort services, alcoholic beverages, dating apps, and weapons. This would help align Brazil’s framework with international standards of tighter control on children’s and adolescents’ use of social media.
