Slovakia strengthens gambling ad rules during World Cup 2026
Slovakia’s gambling regulator, the Úrad pre reguláciu hazardných hier (ÚRHH), has revealed that it will increase the supervision of gambling ads during the FIFA World Cup 2026 period, warning operators to comply with consumer protection and responsible gambling laws.
The regulatory body stated that monitoring of both online and land-based licensees will be tightened for the duration of the tournament, with all marketing materials on social media, TV, and outdoor locations required to meet gambling advertisement standards. Moreover, the regulator added that it will impose enforcement action against any operator that fails to comply with the laws.
Director General of Gambling Policy at URHH, Libuša Baranová, said:
“During the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the Gambling Regulatory Authority will consistently monitor and evaluate the content of operators’ advertising campaigns throughout the duration of the tournament.”
Baranová further added that the World Cup shouldn’t be taken advantage of for launching aggressive marketing campaigns or using pushy player acquisition methods, and instead operators must use the opportunity to promote safer gambling practices. At the same time, operators are required to include deposit limits and self-exclusion tools in their advertisements.
The regulator’s warning comes as Slovakia is facing political criticism over the rise of the country’s online gambling market, with stricter measures aimed at addressing authorities’ concerns.
