Spain orders NordVPN and ProtonVPN to block illegal streams
A Spanish court has ordered NordVPN and ProtonVPN to block IP addresses that host illegal LaLiga streams.
The injunction labels both VPN services as “technological intermediaries” and obligates them to intervene; however, as they operate outside EU jurisdiction, it’s unclear how the order will be enforced.
On February 19, 2026, the Commercial Court No. 1 of Córdoba granted LaLiga and its broadcasting partner Telefónica Audiovisual Digital (TAD) an emergency injunction against the VPNs, but the companies weren’t present in court when the ruling was handed down.
ProtonVPN wrote:
“We have become aware of recent reports concerning legal proceedings in Spain that may affect VPN services, including ProtonVPN. At this stage, we were not aware of any proceedings that may have been underway prior to these reports coming to light, and we have not been formally notified of any proceedings or judgment. Spanish courts, like all courts operating under the rule of law, are bound by procedural safeguards that ensure parties are given a fair opportunity to present their case before any binding judgement is rendered.”
Additionally, NordVPN called the decision unacceptable and stated that it had also not been involved in any legal proceedings in Spain.
The court order is dynamic, which means that LaLiga and Telefónica can continuously update the list of IP addresses that the VPNs must block, but enough digital evidence has to be presented to prove that the IPs are really streaming illegal content.
