Spain reports iGaming growth despite strict restrictions

Spain reports significant growth in the iGaming industry, with the Directorate General of Gambling (DGOJ) noting increased marketing practices despite federal restrictions.

In 2024, the iGaming market in Spain generated €1.45 billion in gross gaming revenue (GGR), a 17% increase from 2023. Sports betting led the way with a 24% growth, reaching €609 million in GGR. Meanwhile, online casinos remained the largest segment, contributing €731 million, driven by a surge in online slots.

Gambling advertising also took a hit, reaching €525 million in 2024, up from €466 million the previous year. This included significant spending on bonuses, advertising, and affiliate partnerships. The Supreme Court even removed certain advertising restrictions, allowing more freedom for online promotions.

DGOJ summarised:

“Since reporting on individual online gambling segments in 2015, this has led to increasingly higher market shares for online casinos compared to other disciplines. In 2024, they accounted for 64.62% of the casino market and had an annual growth rate of 22.80%. Compared to the previous year, live roulette increased by 10.41% and blackjack by 3.80%. In contrast, conventional roulette has decreased by -8.46% this year.”

Looking ahead, Spain is tightening its gambling regulations with new laws aimed at making the country the safest jurisdiction in Europe. Earlier, Spain eyed stricter ID requirements aiming to exclude minors from the gambling industry.
