Study reveals Ontario players’ preferences in online gambling

Over eighty-six percent of Ontario gamblers, according to the report, favor legal gambling sites over unlicensed ones.

The second anniversary of regulated online gambling in Ontario was marked on April 4, 2024. AGCO and iGaming Ontario worked together to create the program.

To examine patterns in the first two years of the market, they worked with Ipsos to perform a study. Regulated internet casinos were the most preferred option, as 86.4 percent of Ontario players used them. This represents a rise of 85.3 percent over an identical study that was carried out in 2023. Reviewed websites guarantee player safety, data security, and game integrity, according to AGCO’s Dr. Karin Schnarr.

Even though regulated websites are favored, some players continue to use unlicensed gambling portals. Roughly fourteen percent of participants in the poll exclusively used unlicensed websites, while twenty percent of players used both legal and unregulated platforms. This emphasizes how important it is to keep pushing players in the direction of regulated, safer solutions.

Regarding gambling tendencies, 29.5 percent of Ontario residents gambled in the previous three months, 20.3 percent in the previous month, and 35.2 percent of residents bet online in the previous year. The age group of 35–54 accounts for the largest proportion of gamblers, followed by 19–34 and over 55.

Ontario has granted licenses to forty-seven operators to run seventy-seven regulated locations since it was founded. Push Gaming, Peter & Sons, and Booming Games are a few of these operators. When operators violate responsible gambling policies, the local authority punishes them. One such example is PointsBet Canada, which was fined CA$150,000 in November 2023.
