Sweden plans to ban all illegal iGaming platforms

Sweden’s Gambling Authority, Spelinspektionen, has released a new report on the country’s iGaming market, raising red flags about the ease of access to illegal gambling sites.
According to the report, despite the fact that only 5% of active players favor illegal practices, these websites remain widespread in the country. To monitor the market, Spelinspektionen requires more opportunities to act, as under the current law, the regulator has the power to control only those websites that directly target Swedish consumers.
As a result, Spelinspektionen is calling for changes to the Gambling Act that would allow it to block all unlicensed gambling operators, regardless of their marketing approach. This move is essential to protect consumers and uphold the integrity of Sweden’s licensed market.
Camilla Rosenberg, Director General of Spelinspektionen, welcomed an ongoing government investigation into expanding the law’s scope, stating the authority is ready to take stronger action if given the legal backing. The investigation is expected to conclude by September 17.
Earlier, Sweden’s parliament, the Riksdag, voted to ban land-based casinos, making Sweden exclusively an iGaming market by 2027.
