Sweden to Stop Twitch Influencers From Promoting Illegal Gambling
Sweden’s Gambling Authority, Spelinspektionen, is taking action to stop the promotion of unregulated gambling websites by Twitch influencers.
The Swedish Gambling Act states that it is illegal to market gambling services to Swedish players if the operator doesn’t hold a valid license from Spelinspektionen.
The Gambling Authority’s research revealed that influencers on Twitch, a platform with a strong following among young audiences, often include direct links and bonus offers to unlicensed casinos, thereby violating national regulations. After the intervention from Spelinspektionen, all monitored influencers stopped promoting unlicensed gambling websites.
Spelinspektionen shared in a statement:
“This spring, Spelinspektionen launched an investigation into influencers who used their online platforms to promote illegal gambling. Such marketing is considered to be the promotion of unauthorized gambling operations when directed at Swedish consumers, which is prohibited under the Swedish Gambling Act. The authority will continue to monitor influencers and other actors involved in or promoting unauthorised gambling in accordance with the Gambling Act.”
While no fines or penalties have been issued at this stage, the authority has made it clear that ongoing monitoring and enforcement will continue, with the possibility of stronger legal actions if violations continue.
