Sweden upholds AML fines on Betsson, Snabbare & Spooniker
Sweden’s gambling regulator, the Spelinspektionen, has announced that the Administrative Court in Linköping has rejected Betsson’s, Snabbare’s, and Kindred-owned Spooniker’s appeals over $2.28 million in anti-money laundering fines.
Under the decision, all of the previously issued fines will stand, which were first imposed in May 2025, arguing that the three operators had failed to comply with customer due diligence standards and didn’t conduct appropriate monitoring or checks of users. Betsson is set to pay a $673,000 penalty, while Snabbare and Spooniker will pay $570,000 and $1 million, respectively.
During the proceedings, the court identified that the operators relied on previous winnings to justify large deposits from risky gamblers instead of checking external fund sources. Betsson’s case revolved around 8 players who deposited between $13,000 and $50,000 in just a few months, with Snabbare being targeted for failing to identify 10 risky gamblers and not properly documenting their large deposits. Lastly, Spooniker received the biggest fine because of failings connected to 5 users, combined with a similar previous warning in 2022.
Betsson had stated in court:
“Betsson’s possible violations have neither been systematic nor serious.”
Snabbare further commented:
“Neither the number of alleged breaches nor their nature supports the conclusion that any shortcomings were systematic.”
For Betsson and Snabbare, the court agreed that the breaches weren’t systematic; however, in the case of Spooniker, its violations had grounds to be considered as repeated offenses. All three operators are now expected to pay the original fines in full.
