The rulings, issued on October 8, 2026, cover Hillside (Sports) ENC, which holds bet365’s Swedish betting license, and casino licensee Hillside (Gaming) ENC. The Linköping Administrative Court had set the amounts in June 2024 at around $4.0 million for the betting company and around $401,000 for the casino side.
At the center of the case is a “no limit” deposit setting available to Swedish players from January 1, 2019, to April 18, 2022. Under the Gambling Act, players must set a maximum deposit amount for each day, week, and month. bet365 had a SEK500 million ceiling in its systems, but customers couldn’t see it, and both courts ruled the option failed to meet the requirement. Spelinspektionen, Sweden’s gambling regulator, had called bet365’s reading of the law “not only incorrect” but “remarkable and nonchalant.”
The regulator looked at high-loss customers between October 17 and December 17, 2021, and found that bet365 relied on automated messages and was slow to apply stronger restrictions. According to the appeal court, interventions must happen simultaneously with the gambling activity.
Spelinspektionen issued the penalties in 2023 at SEK65 million and SEK14 million, but a Supreme Administrative Court ruling on how turnover is calculated lowered the legal maximum.
