Tesco warns customers over illegal online casino scam ads

British multinational retailer Tesco has warned its customers and alerted the police after an illegal online casino was discovered to have used its branding to promote and advertise unlicensed gambling.

Tesco warns customers over illegal online casino scam ads

Promotions and ads from “Tesco Slots” started appearing on social media platforms, with the website using Tesco’s well-known red and blue branding. The illegal casino advertised its product on its website and Facebook; however, the Facebook page was removed by Meta after media inquiries.

The illegal casino states on its website:

“The official casino marketplace powered by Tesco. Tesco Slots brings the UK’s most trusted supermarket brand to online casino. Earn rewards on every spin, the same way you earn Clubcard points on your weekly shop.”

Additionally, the fake site remains accessible to UK users, falsely stating that Tesco has 107 years of UK trading history and is a FTSE 100 company. The casino holds no license from the UK Gambling Commission, making its operations illegal in the country.

The case was reported to the National Cyber Security Centre and the City of London Police-operated Report Fraud, although police have shared that the complaint hasn’t yet been passed on for investigation.

The incident adds to the list of brands and individuals that have been involved in similar scams, including footballers Bellingham and Fernandez targeted by illegal operators’ AI ads to promote their unlicensed casinos.
