Texas senator advances gambling legalization proposal

Texas Senator Nathan Johnson defends the gambling legalization proposal, rejecting any influence from Sands PAC.
Johnson, who represents parts of Dallas, Garland, and Irving, filed Senate Joint Resolution 82. The resolution would not immediately legalize casinos but would allow voters to decide whether to repeal the state’s constitutional ban on gambling. If passed, it would give the legislature authority to regulate casino gaming in the future.
His proposal comes after Las Vegas Sands Corporation’s plan to develop a high-end resort in Irving. Although the company received zoning approval, it later removed the casino project as a result of public opposition. The timing led to speculation about whether Sands’ involvement played a role in pushing gambling legislation.
Johnson firmly denies any cooperation with the company. He emphasized that his support for legalized gambling predates this proposal and stems from his belief that voters, not lobbyists or donors should determine the state’s position on casinos.
Earlier, in February, gambling legalization sparked a debate in Texas. If approved by voters, the resolution would permit the state to issue up to ten casino licenses for large-scale resort developments. Johnson called for open, fact-based discussions on gambling, citing potential economic benefits and the ongoing issue of illegal gaming in Texas.
