UKGC CEO celebrates cooperation with 500 operators
The UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) CEO Andrew Rhodes shared positive results from an operator working group program aimed at improving collaboration with gambling operators and further combatting illegal gambling.
Initially launched in February, the program provided operators with a direct line for their queries, together with technical support and advice. At that time, the operator working group had only eight operators cooperating. Later, by October, the group recorded cooperation from almost 500 operators. This means that 22% of the gambling companies in the UK are now licensed and work in compliance with the country’s laws.
Rhodes said:
“With the end of the pilot, we are now going to take some time to review if this service is the solution that best serves the needs of licensees and is achievable on a permanent basis at the same time. But I think it’s fair to say the reaction from operators involved—including many of you in the room today—has been encouraging.”
93% of the inquiries were resolved in only 5 days, marking a positive engagement rate.
Rhodes added:
“The Commission’s strategy on combatting illegal gambling is to cause as much upstream disruption as we can, which is why we have focused on ISPs, payment providers, search engines, software suppliers, and more. We want to understand what the actual reality is for accounts being factored, restricted, closed, put onto zero stakes, and other similar things. We cannot continue to be surrounded by a debate where it is not clear what the true picture is.”
UKGC will later start to collect information on restricted accounts.
