US Commercial Gaming Hits Record Revenue of $72 Billion

The American Gaming Association reports that US gaming revenue reached $72 billion in 2024, with strong online growth and a record $15.9 billion in taxes.

In its 2025 “State of the States” report, the American Gaming Association (AGA) details that commercial gaming revenue climbed 7.5% from 2023 to a little more than $72 billion. State taxes on the unprecedented revenue were up 8.5% year over year to $15.9 billion, also a new record.

Bill Miller, president and CEO of the AGA, said:

“Propelled by another year of strong organic growth in existing online markets for both sports betting and iGaming, the commercial casino sector enjoyed a third consecutive record year. The unprecedented success of our industry comes as more Americans than ever before have access to, and allocate their entertainment budgets to, the legal, regulated gaming market.”

The AGA estimates that more than 50% of American adults in the US participated in some form of legal gambling last year, and 45% visited a physical casino.

Although revenue from land-based casinos saw minimal growth at just 1%, totaling $49.9 billion from 492 licensed properties, the overall gains in digital channels lifted the sector to new heights. iGaming is currently legal in just seven US states (Connecticut, Delaware, Michigan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and West Virginia), while 34 states have authorized mobile sports betting, increasing accessibility nationwide.

New casino developments in states like Arkansas, Nebraska, and Virginia, along with the highly anticipated launch of a casino in New York City, point to continued expansion. The growth also reflects shifting public perception: once frowned upon, gambling is now viewed as a legitimate, regulated form of entertainment that supports local economies.

AGA president and CEO Ben Miller added:

“Americans increasingly see gaming in a positive light, recognizing our commitment to operating responsibly and the economic benefits we bring to local communities. These positive views are the foundation of our industry’s credibility with the public, regulators, and lawmakers.”

With more states exploring regulation and online gambling on the rise, the commercial gaming industry is set for another record-breaking year in 2025.
