Wisconsin sports betting bill heads to Governor Evers

On March 17, 2027, the Senate cleared Assembly Bill 601 by a 21-12 vote, which means sports betting could soon be legalized in Wisconsin, making it the first state to pass new betting legislation since Missouri in 2024.

AB 601 is a bipartisan bill that aims to allow citizens to place online bets if they are processed by servers located on tribal land. Currently, the bill is sitting on Governor Tony Evers’ desk for final approval.

The bill aligns with the state’s constitution, which prohibits most types of gambling outside of tribal land, as this bill is for tribal-only sports betting. Under the new legislation, 60% of the revenue will go to tribal operators, and the state will also receive a share, but the revenue split will be fully decided later, when updates in tribal compacts are made.

At the moment, there are 26 tribal casinos in Wisconsin, with Governor Evers recently allowing the Oneida Nation, Forest County Potawatomi, and Ho-Chunk Nation to launch on-site sports betting at the casinos.

Chairwoman Nicole Boyd of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa said:

“By allowing a legal framework for mobile sports wagering through Wisconsin’s tribes, the state will see increased revenue through the state gaming compacts, and consumers will have the legal protection needed to ensure they receive fair play.”

According to Wisconsin law, the governor has six days to decide on signing or vetoing the bill.
