Wynn NY project faces opposition from the state residents
Protect the High Line, the group that stands against the NY casino project by Wynn Resorts, insists that the majority of the residents are not eager to have a casino in New York.
Protect the High Line is submitting its statements based on the research conducted back in September by Public Policy Polling. The poll questioned 1,300 residents in the High Line area.
Protect the High Line stated:
“More than 3,000 local residents have already joined the Protect the High Line campaign. Local leaders, such as Sally Greenspan, president of the Council of Chelsea Block Associations (CCBA), have voiced their concerns about the drastic reduction in housing units.”
Back in 2009, Related reached an agreement with New York, promising to build between 3,454 and 5,700 housing units for the development of the Western Rail Yards. However, the developer’s latest proposal, which includes the Wynn gaming venue, only plans for 1,500 housing units.
The opposition commented:
“56% of respondents oppose the proposed zoning changes that would allow for the Hudson Yards expansion over the Western Rail Yards, compared to only 24% in favor. 70% agree that the proposed skyscrapers and casino next to the northern part of the High Line would harm neighboring West Side communities.”
Protect The High Line added:
“The polling shows widespread discontent, particularly among Democratic voters, who oppose the rezoning changes by 57% to 22%,” added Protect The High Line.”
In 2025, New York will have a mayoral election, which will decide the future of the casino project.
