$5M jackpot fraud suspect arrested by police

A woman from Hearne, Texas, identified as A.J., was arrested for stealing and fraudulently claiming a $5 million lottery ticket.

According to the investigators from the Hearne Police Department and the Texas Lottery Commission, A.J., a worker at a QuickPump convenience store, stole the winning ticket from her workplace on November 5. The ticket was for a $50 scratch-off game called Luxe.

Initially, A.J. was held in jail on two charges: fraud in claiming a lottery prize over $10,000 and theft of property valued at over $300,000. Her bond was set at $1.5 million for each charge, totaling $3 million. However, a judge later reduced her bond to $150,000 per charge, and A.J. was released on bail.

Steve Helm, Texas Lottery Commission media relations division director said:

“As this is an open, pending investigation and not directly under the Texas Lottery Commission’s authority, we are unable to comment further.”

Stealing the luck

This kind of action is not a surprise to industry people. Earlier this year, a gas station clerk was accused of keeping a customer’s $1 million winning ticket. The clerk falsely claimed the ticket was a loser and stole it. Fortunately, security cameras revealed the truth, and the winner eventually received their prize.

These cases highlight the importance of checking your tickets yourself. Moreover, they show how careful investigations help maintain trust in the lottery system by catching and stopping fraudulent activities.
