Belgium reports GGR rise despite strict regulatory controls

For 2023, the Commission des Jeux de Hasard (CJH) reported a 16.7% gambling gross revenue rise in Belgium.

Starting from 2022, the Belgian government required operators to enforce a €200 weekly loss limit. Then, starting from 1 July 2023, operators have been forced to stop advertising their services.

Despite the regulatory controls from the Belgian government, the gambling gross revenue in Belgium for 2023 significantly varies from the revenue of 2022, marking a rise of €1.5bn equal to €1.7bn.

During the previous year, the betting sector in Belgium grew by 8.4%. The online betting sector remains dominant with GGR for €944.6m, while the offline betting sector has GGR for €758m. The new regulatory controls, however, hit newsagents hard, dropping their revenue by 26.3%.

Belgium continues to make its gambling regulations stricter, including the rise of the legal gambling age to 21, starting in September 2024.
