The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has revealed that Betway’s Facebook ad, promoting Formula 1 driver Sir Lewis Hamilton, breaches gambling marketing rules that are aimed at protecting minors.

The Facebook ad posted in July 2025 showed three Formula 1 drivers with their backs to the camera, with the central driver having “Hamilton” written on the back.

Betway’s logo was shown throughout the video, which was flagged by the ASA, arguing that the ad would have a strong impact on younger audiences. Hamilton’s social media data shows that he has 1.6 million under-18 followers on Instagram and over 92,000 on TikTok. The ASA acknowledged that minors could easily recognize the figure.

The ASA noted Facebook’s self-reporting age-verification system, which can allow minors to access adult content. In addition, the regulator stated that Hamilton’s visibility and high social media following place him in the category of public figures who can strongly appeal to under-18s.

The ad featured a clear indication of Hamilton, so the ASA ruled that it showed a figure whose appeal to minors met the threshold for a breach.

Betway was urged not to publish the ad again in its current form. For the future, the company was instructed to avoid including such public personalities who could target minors.
