Brazil’s state capital, Rio de Janeiro, has officially banned the advertisement of sports betting and gambling platforms in public spaces under Decree No. 58,274, effective from July 13, 2026.

The prohibition applies to outdoor and public ads for online betting websites, including in places like street furniture, billboards, banners, or any kind of locations that require a municipal license or permit. With the approval of the decree, authorities launched enforcement action on the same day and began removing existing ads of gambling products.

The Mayor of Rio de Janeiro, Eduardo Cavaliere, wrote on X:

“Bets are a plague, and we have decided to make Rio the national example in combating the plague of bets. This decision is not against those who place a bet by their own choice. It is against an industry that has begun to occupy streets, avenues, bus stops, and other public spaces to encourage a behavior that can lead to debt, addiction, and the destruction of families.”

Under the new law, operators are now restricted from showing logos, company names, trademarks, slogans, or any kind of identifying marketing materials on public advertisements, with City Hall-organized events now also prohibited from displaying betting sponsors.

The latest measure against gambling promotions comes just three days after the publication of two federal ordinances, Ordinance No. 73 and Ordinance No. 1,964, aimed at introducing stricter rules for gambling ads in Brazil.
