Colombia to block illegal gambling promotions on social media
Colombia’s gambling regulator, Coljuegos, announced its new plan to block illegal gambling promotions on social media, partnering with Meta and the Cyber Center of the National Police.
Almost 289 accounts are now under the target, including those of high-profile influencers like Daneidy Barrera, Rojas Yeferson Cossio, and Carlos Mauricio Gómez La Liendra. Together, these personalities have more than 23 million followers.
Coljuegos director Marco Emilio Hincapié commented:
“We have asked Meta to block these and other profiles that operate games of chance without state authorization or promote foreign betting platforms that fail to pay exploitation fees in Colombia.”
The impact of illegal gambling on Colombia’s economy is significant, with an estimated loss of 70 billion annually. If not used for gambling purposes, these funds could support public health initiatives. Investigations are also on their way to identify 79 other accounts that remain unidentified.
Countries to combat illegal gambling
Nowadays, every second country is working to strengthen its efforts in combating illegal gambling. Countries such as France, Italy, and Germany have introduced new, tighter regulations. Italy banned all gambling ads in 2019, while France set tighter controls on social media promotions.
