Crackdown on illegal gambling websites in Ukraine
371 websites that provide illegal gambling in the nation have been blocked by the Commission for the Regulation of Gambling and Lotteries (KRAIL).
The limitations are the result of coordinated efforts between KRAIL and the Ukrainian Security Service. In order to terminate the domain names of the illicit gambling websites, Order No. 451/2256 was issued. The order restricts electronic communication service providers to ban websites utilizing their Domain Name System (DNS) servers.
Following a partnership between KRAIL and the Security Service, more than one thousand orders were issued in April and May to restrict access to domain names and subdomains on DNS servers. The duration of the regulator’s control over gambling in Ukraine is unknown, which is why KRAIL is taking action against the illicit websites. The Ukrainian parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, decided to dissolve KRAIL in April. After more than a year of opposition to the regulations governing gambling in Ukraine, a referendum was held. Frustration with KRAIL’s capacity to do regulatory tasks, such licensing, was the root of the opposition.
KRAIL is a collegial body with six members and a chairman; meetings are only considered legitimate when five members are present. There were significant delays in processing license applications because some commission members were called up to serve in the military after Russia invaded Ukraine. The bill also included various regulatory mechanisms and tighter limitations on gambling-related advertising. There will now be a second reading of the bill. If the bill is approved, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy would sign it into law.
