Dutch iGaming market opens today

Today – 1st October, 2021, is the official opening of the newly regulated iGaming market of Netherlands, where numerous operators have already secured their entrance.

The big advancement will see the country’s sports betting and casino fans finally be able to practice regulated, responsible gaming by placing bets legally, following the Remote Gambling Act (KOA).

The initial plan was to pass the act in July 2020, which would be followed by the formal opening of the market in the beginning of this year, however it was delayed by another 6 months, then once again due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Finally, the KOA was passed on April 2021, paving the way to today’s opening.

The Dutch Regulator’s – Kansspelautoriteit’s (KSA) chairperson, Rene Jansen, stated on the regulation:

“Today marks a crucial moment of legalizing online games of chance”

The regulator also highlighted the fact that it was no longer possible to simply ban gambling in the country, thus, regulating and legalizing it instead sounded like the better choice, which will help protect the Dutch players from gambling abuse, creating the ground for ethical and responsible gaming to flourish in the newly regulated market.

Among the operators securing their way into the promising new legal market were Kambi and BetEnt with their BetCity.nl platform launch.
