Ex-NBA players charged in federal sports gambling scandal
Former NBA players Ed Davis and Malik Beasley have been named in a federal lawsuit accusing both of taking part in a sports gambling scheme and manipulating the outcomes of games.
Federal prosecutors believe the pair worked together to purposefully change performance during games when Beasley played with the Milwaukee Bucks in 2023-24, with the first incident taking place on January 26, 2024, during the Bucks versus the Cleveland Cavaliers game.
The scheme initially started after Beasley accumulated millions in gambling losses, and Davis loaned him money to pay them off; as a result, Beasley joined the betting scheme to pay Davis back.
Malik Beasley’s lawyer, Steve Haney, stated:
“An indictment is nothing but a probable cause one-sided charging document. It is not evidence, and Malik maintains his presumption of innocence throughout this two-year investigation. We ask that people reserve judgment until all the facts are known.”
According to authorities, the scheme ended with the March 21, 2024, game between the Bucks and the Brooklyn Nets, during which Beasley was supposed to go under but failed to do so, leading to the co-conspirators demanding their lost bets back. Davis had allegedly agreed to work with Beasley to manipulate future bets, but pulled out of the deal after Jontay Porter’s investigation for a similar case.
Lawyer Haney additionally shared that Beasley will voluntarily surrender for arraignment on July 1, 2026, in New York.
