FanDuel faces $10,000 fine for violating betting rules
The Massachusetts Gaming Commission fined FanDuel $10,000 as a result of violating the state’s sports betting rules and allowing bets on local college teams.
Betting on Massachusetts’ local college teams is allowed only when they are part of a tournament with four or more teams. However, FanDuel mistakenly enabled betting on Boston College during the NCAA Tournament.
FanDuel self-reported the error, explaining it as an employee’s mistake. As a result, the Massachusetts Gaming Commission acknowledged the situation.
Nakisha Skinner, the MGC commissioner, said:
“Any recommendation from the IEB considers the severity of the circumstances, ensuring the penalty is proportionate to the actual circumstances of the non-compliance issue.”
By reporting the error, FanDuel highlighted its dedication to compliance and player protection. Moreover, the company also launched “Trusted Voices: Conversations About Betting,” a resource to educate parents and educators about responsible gambling.
FanDuel in the center of legal disputes
The case from the Massachusetts Gaming Commission is not the first legal action that FanDuel faces. Recently, a lawsuit filed in 2020, involving more than 100 plaintiffs, including FanDuel founders, early employees, and investors, was resumed by the New York Supreme Court after years of delays.
