FanDuel fined $125,000 by Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission
The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission issued a $125,000 fine on FanDuel for five separate violations of the state’s sports betting regulations.
FanDuel failed to comply with legal betting standards and responsible gambling requirements. Among the violations was the acceptance of bets on events, such as the Super Bowl, certain football matches, and golf tournaments, which is not permitted under Iowa regulations.
The most serious violation was FanDuel’s failure to maintain responsible gambling options on the platform, for which it received a fine of $30,000.
Acknowledging the violations, FanDuel’s Counsel Director Ben Roth said that the company “did not meet the high standard” and confirmed that FanDuel will act on it immediately. The actions will include enhanced employee training, detailed operational checklists, and increased automation to reduce the risk of manual errors. FanDuel refunded the affected customers and returned the revenue generated from the prohibited bets.
Despite these corrective actions, the Commission is still frustrated over the frequency and timing of the violations.
Commission Chair Daryl Olsen stated:
“Five counts within a very short period of time is just too much. We expect more.”
Olsen emphasized the broader regulatory context, pointing out that each state’s rules are unique and that consistency is necessary in how Iowa treats online operators and physical casinos.
