French regulators warn sports gamblers on online tipsters

Sports gamblers are advised to exercise particular caution when interacting with online tipsters by the French gambling regulator.

According to the Directorate for Competition, Consumer Affairs, and Fraud Control (DGCCRF) and the Autorité Nationale des Jeux (ANJ), any assertion that a service would raise the likelihood of winning in games of chance is “misleading in nature.”

According to the ANJ and the DGCCRF, such conduct may constitute an offense punishable by criminal prosecution.

The ANJ said in a statement:

“This advice, delivered free of charge or in the form of paid subscriptions, concerns the analysis and probable results of sporting events aimed at guiding consumer betting. “In order to encourage the subscription of subscriptions, some operators display a luxurious lifestyle on social networks, claiming that their advice on sports predictions would allow them to earn a lot of money in a short time.”

A study conducted by the ANJ and the DGCCRF in 2020 and 2021 discovered that 45 percent of the 11 sites investigated stated “more or less explicitly” that utilizing tipsters to influence betting decisions boosts the possibility of winning, with four tipsters later becoming the subject of criminal charges.
