Germany issues warning against prediction market betting

The Joint Gambling Authority of the Federal States (GGL) issued a warning against using prediction markets after media reports suggested some platforms allow bets on sensitive topics, including the war in Ukraine.

In recent months, Germany recorded a rise in “social betting”, where people place bets on political events, world affairs, or other non-sporting outcomes on platforms such as Polymarket.

While the GGL did not confirm if Polymarket specifically offered bets on the Ukraine-Russia conflict, it said there is a growing public threat.

The GGL released a statement:

“The growing public presence of such offers has prompted the authority to issue a targeted warning to the public, raising awareness of the legal situation and the dangers of illegal betting.”

Prediction markets

Prediction markets, allowing people to bet on the outcome of events rather than sports games, have been gaining attention not only in Germany. In the US, they are now as popular as traditional sports betting. Moreover, according to reports, Donald Trump is topping the odds for the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize.

However, unlike sports betting, these platforms are not regulated, at least in Germany, and GGL’s warning hints at legal consequences.
