GGL blocks the Swiss gaming payment provider in Germany

GGL won the legal action against the Swiss payment provider, drawing international operators’ attention to Germany’s market regulations.

GGL, or the German Gambling Authority, is the Joint Gambling Authority of the federal states in Germany, which plays a crucial role in ensuring the gambling industry’s compliance with German laws.

Previously, GGL required the Swiss gaming payment provider to stop providing payments to unlicensed and illegal gambling companies. After not following the GGL’s requirement, the gambling provider received a lawsuit from the company.

On October 2, the Halle Administrative Court upheld the GGL’s order.

Ronald Benter, a board member at the GGL, said:

“This further success in the use of payment blocking shows that national borders are no obstacle to the enforcement of gambling law. We do not tolerate uncooperative behaviour by payment service providers. Companies that do not comply with the applicable laws must expect consequences. The GGL appeals to all payment service providers to comply with the legal requirements and to work with the GGL. The decision of the Halle Administrative Court is another sign that the GGL is also successful internationally in combating unlawful activities.”

GGL invites all payment providers to cooperate with the regulator in order to avoid any future responsibilities. Only in 2023, the GGL investigated almost 1,860 websites and pursued 438 operators suspected of promoting illegal gambling, underlining its commitment to maintaining a regulated and safe gambling environment in Germany.
